The Body as a Path to Relaxation and Balance

Shiatsu is a Japanese bodywork technique that uses conscious touch, pressure, and energy work within the body. It views the body as an interconnected whole and creates space for relaxation, harmonization, and a deeper sense of self.
In “Presence,” it represents the physical plane—a way to shift one’s attention away from constant thinking and back to the body.

When the body needs attention

We don't just perceive stress, fatigue, or long-term strain on the level of thoughts and emotions. We often feel them in our bodies as well.

Shiatsu works with:

  • conscious touch and pressure
  • energy in the body
  • physical tension and stagnation
  • release and harmonization
  • perception of the body and its signals

Shiatsu is performed on a futon, through clothing, and without the use of oils. It involves conscious pressure, breathwork, gentle mobilization, and work with the meridians.

The body as part of Presence

Shiatsu naturally complements inner work with a physical dimension. While The Journey turns our attention to inner experiences and emotions, Shiatsu brings our attention to the body.

It is precisely this connection between these levels that is one of the fundamental ideas of Presence—not perceiving a person in separate parts, but as a whole.

My Journey to Shiatsu

I first encountered Shiatsu more than 25 years ago. I came in for a treatment for my body, but I left feeling that it had touched me on a level far beyond the physical. I felt relief, greater peace, and a deeper connection with myself. At the time, I couldn’t quite put my finger on exactly what was happening inside me; I just knew that this experience had a deeper meaning for me.

Over the years, I’ve returned to Shiatsu time and again. At various stages of my life, it has provided me with support, a chance to pause, and the opportunity to listen more closely to myself.

Today, Shiatsu is also part of my own professional training. I am currently in my second year of professional Shiatsu studies. I see Shiatsu as a gentle yet profound way of accompanying a person. For me, it is not just a technique for working with the body, but also a path to greater balance, presence, and connection with oneself.
I do not currently offer Shiatsu as a standalone service. Until I complete my studies, I would be happy to recommend an accredited professional if you are interested. Once I have obtained the necessary qualifications, I will provide information on the options for receiving Shiatsu treatments.

How Shiatsu works

Shiatsu—A Space to Return to the Body

Shiatsu is a gentle Japanese touch therapy that harmonizes the flow of energy in the body, releases tension, and promotes natural balance. Sessions take place in silence, in the present moment, and with respect for what the client is currently experiencing.

How a session unfolds

  • Initial Attunement – approximately 30 minutes
A gentle pause, a conversation about current experiences, breath, and the body’s needs. Creating a safe space where the client can relax and prepare for touch.
  • Shiatsu treatment – 60 to 90 minutes
Working with meridians, using finger pressure, the palms, and mindful touch. Supporting the flow of energy, releasing both physical and emotional tension.
  • Time for Integration – approximately 30 minutes The
body completes the processes that were initiated during the treatment. The client has space to lie down in peace, breathe, and let the effects of the treatment settle.

Total session duration: 2–2.5 hours

The session is guided gently, safely, and with respect for the client’s boundaries.

TESTIMONIALS

I embarked on this journey because I struggled with everyday communication and talking to people, which is why I never had many friends. I was also unable, for example, to give presentations or speak in front of a large group, which limited me especially at school.

To be honest, I didn't expect much from The Journey at first, but I decided to give it a try.

I can't say that I've suddenly become a particularly outgoing or talkative person, but I've noticed a huge change. I feel much more confident in this area; I’ve finally made friends at school, and I don’t start panicking every time a stranger speaks to me. I’m so relieved that this fear of mine no longer limits me so much in life.

At first, I didn’t know what I wanted to focus on physically. I entered the process feeling stressed, with pressure in my chest, pain in my side, and a general ache as if I were carrying a heavy boulder. Gradually, themes of fear—that I wasn’t good enough and a fear of pain—began to surface within me. During the process, I felt something inside me relax, and a greater sense of peace set in.
After about a month, I noticed a significant change. I began to live at a slower pace, more calmly, and with greater perspective. I also felt that my body was stronger and healthier. The pain in my side, which I had associated with my kidney and high blood pressure, was no longer present.
Another very powerful moment for me was a memory of my brother, which brought me to tears, gave me relief, and offered a new perspective on the past.
Above all, the entire process brought me a great sense of relief, peace, and inner relaxation. I definitely recommend it.

Before The Journey, I didn't really have anything major I needed to figure out. I just wanted to give it a try, and I was curious to see what it would actually bring me. I didn’t go into it with any major theme or expectations; I just let things take their course and was open to whatever came my way.

More than anything, The Journey gave me the chance to stop and reflect. In everyday life, you’re always rushing around, dealing with work, results, and everything else, but you don’t really take the time to think about yourself. Here, I had the space to reflect on what I’m doing, why I’m doing it, and what’s more important in life. I’d recommend it to anyone who wants to take a moment to look back on what they’ve been through and, at the same time, get a clearer sense of where to go from here.

Literally, it means “finger pressure.” It is not primarily a massage; it is a treatment using finger pressure.

You’ll come to the treatment fully clothed, and you’ll remain clothed during the session. You may change into different clothes, but all parts of your body should remain covered by clothing. In fact, the shiatsu practitioner may cover you with a blanket and make the treatment more comfortable by using pillows to support strained parts of your body.

A proper shiatsu treatment should be provided on a futon on the floor.

The goal of shiatsu is to restore the body's balance—emotional, mental, and physical.

No, it can treat chronic conditions. As for acute conditions, it can treat colds and the early stages of respiratory illnesses.

Yes, it’s actually recommended—you can even get shiatsu as a preventive measure. You can also come in for shiatsu if you’re experiencing emotional difficulties; it doesn’t have to be solely a physical issue.

According to the principles of traditional Eastern medicine, unprocessed emotions—especially fear, sadness, and anger—can contribute to an imbalance in the body. Excessive thinking, anxiety, shock, overwork, or excessive stress can also affect it.
